Names

  • Last name: 西村 (にしむら, Nishimura)
    • Kyo's last name has been publicly known since his time in Masquerade, as he used it as the address for fan contact. Over the years, he mentioned it on various occasions, such as in 灰色の銀貨 (Haiiro no Ginka) #11, where he also says that the Nishimura Bakery in Kyoto isn't his family's bakery. In general, he makes no secret of his last name, going even as far as combining it with his artist name in some cases.
  • First name: 宏則 (ひろのり, Hironori)
    • Kyo's real first name was, for the longest time, unknown to most fans, especially in the West. Instead, a couple of wrong names came to be known over the years, as can be seen further down the list. Some people claim that his real name was leaked by hospital staff during one of Kyo's stays there, or was published in a newspaper at that time. While that is is of course impossible to verify, his first name was actually confirmed by a junior high-school book that was sold online in 2021. Nevertheless, it's not encouraged to address him with this name or use it for him in general.
  • Stage name: 京 (きょう, Kyo)
    • Although this kanji is usually romanised as kyou or kyō, it's always written as kyo.
    • Former: 殀磨 (よま, Yoma)
      • His stage name in 月蝕 (Gesshoku) and Viṣṇu. A signature confirms the kanji.
    • Former: 牛若 (Ushiwaka)
      • His stage name in 狂殺会 (Kyōsatsukai).

      • While "西村 (Nishimura)" is of course correct, the Kanji 亨 – which is usually read as とおる (tooru), but can also be read as きょう (kyō) – was given as a joke answer by Kyo in 灰色の銀貨 (Haiiro no Ginka) #15 (2002). When Kyo's answer reached Western fans, they took it at face value and it spread across the internet. Subsequently, "Tooru Nishimura" became the most famous of Kyo's wrong names and was even published in KERRANG! in 2009. To this day, many people still believe that this is his real name. Interestingly, this name was already suspected to be his real name among Japanese fans as early as 2000, but the source for it is unknown.
      • Allegedly, there's also a porn director with this name. However, this is only partially true, the director's actual name is 村西とおる (Muranishi Tooru), with the kanji of the last name switched around.
    • 西村 享 (Nishimura Tooru)
      • This is a variant of the previous name with the same reading. It can also be found online, both among Japanese fans and on Western fan sites.
    • Niimura Tooru
      • While it's unknown how exactly this name came to be, it seems to be a variant of "Nishimura Tooru", or possibly a confusion with Kaoru's last name "Niikura". It's most likely a Western invention, as it has no known Kanji and was published on Western fan sites as early as 2003. When the band held their first live in Germany in 2005, it even appeared in a German newspaper.
    • 西村 京太郎 (Nishimura Kyōtarō)
      • Kyōtarō Nishimura (died March 3, 2022) was a Japanese writer of mystery stories. Kyo wrote this name in a photobook, but crossed out the 太郎 (tarō).
    • 妖磨 (Yoma)
      • This name is mistakenly used on the 月蝕 (Gesshoku) VHS.
    • 殆磨 (Hotoma)
      • Misreading of the first kanji in 殀磨 (Yoma).
